“Don’t Call Me Inspirational.”

Meet Aimee Mullins – Double Amputee, Model and Athlete

Aimee Mullins is One Amazing Woman!

I just discovered and watched two videos that feature Aimee Mullins. Aimee is a very pretty blond who has competed in the Olympics, modeled and is now a public speaker. What makes Aimee unique is that her parents had her legs amputated below the knees when she was a baby. The reason for the amputations was that Aimee was born without any bones in her lower legs and having them amputated would give her the best chance to walk.  Aimee Mullins runs and models while wearing prostetic legs! Aimee has set two world records with those legs! Aimee also has a valid objection to being called “disabled” and “inspirational”. She is correct in stating that the words that we use to describe people can limit how well these people can function in society and how productive they can become! See below:

Disabled does not mean less abled! People who have disabilities may want to be “normal”, but these challenges that they overcome shape them. Often, they become better people as they overcome these challenges.

This is a really nice interview with Aimee Mullins in which she shows her “pretty legs” and how she changes them.

I will post more information on Aimee Mullins as I find it and I will also look for more videos of Aimee Mullins.
